Altered Art Toy Theatre/theater: "Fairy Dreams Long Ago"

I have finally finished my altered art toy theatre (theater). This is toy theatre with a difference. What I have done is constructed a toy theatre out of foam board, and then assembled these items together with glue.

The bottom I have collaged with scrapbook paper (brands: Paper Adventures, NRN Designs) and also specialty grass/flax paper. This has then been spritzed with Krylon's "Make It Stone", also I used that on the side panels, plus a Royal & Langnickel stone rubon as well as spritzing with Krylon's Make it Glitter.

The sides of the theatre have been embellished with Joanna Sheen's decoupage sheets (plus the little girls who the story is about), and Prima Marketing flowers.

Here is the effect to give you an idea what the floor looks like:

Part of the story involves the young girls (for this purpose Katie and Rebecca) and they find fairies in the woods. They go over to the well (first 3D model) which has iridescent fibres protruding out from it, they drink it; and then they follow the silver stones, these get larger to the next scene. It is a take on Alice in Wonderland. They need to pick up the stick to cross the water, where awaits them another girl in the forest whose job it is to look after the forest travellers.

I have not given a story script, rather I prefer people (adults and children) to interpret their own story from the images. This narrative interpretation can lead to many different stories, rather than just one ... so it's great for children's imagination.

Then I collaged the story boards, adding in Mamelok Relief Diecuts of fairies, I also used pictures from calendars and story books.*

* Please note when using other illustrative work, that you can only use it for personal use; you will not be able to resell your work as the copyright is with the artists.

Here are the scenes for the story:

Panel One: Katie and Rebecca sitting in a field of buttercups, sheep grazing on their right, then Katie (the younger sister) spots a fairy and up they get jumping over the grass verge. Here they are confronted by large caterpillars (stickers from Paper Adventures), ladybirds, as well as smaller fairies (from Sticker Fairy book).

This panel had trees drawn which were coloured in with marker pen and then cut out ready for the next scene, which is this panel:

The third panel is when the girls have become small and meet the large fairies in the trees.

Then the story unfolds with the following panels, and these can be used in different sequences, thus changing your story line.

Finishing with this scene, where it is no longer the fairies up in the tree, but Katie and Rebecca.

Vintage Romance Story in Pictures

This is one of Tatjana's quirky Victoriana's star books she made. Remember when making these books we are confined to the resources and materials we have as supplies, so often we have to make up the stories with what we have, and then it can get really quirky.

The opening is entitled "Together Forever"

The next page is scattered with red love hearts, and is showing the story unfolding about the couple's correspondence with one another.

A tiny envelope of ephemera with "The Sweet calm days in golden haze, melt down the amber sky."

This page shows the lady and where she stores her love letters.

Next page is about sweet nothings: sugar pie, honey bunch and sweetheart. Alas, she is now winning him through food.

Here we have an elephant doing a balancing act on a globe. Love equals balance.

And for some kinectic stuff, yes part of the globe slides down revealing 'together forever'. Fly me to the moon.

And here we have a few stolen moments.

Then she unravels her fan and out explodes another letter with lyrics to a song "once in a love", with the violin ready to be played below. Rhapsody in love.

... further on She said .."isn't it romantic and they said it wouldn't last." (the gossips). And the 'tying the knot' – the cord with a heart on it .... He said ....

Embrace destiny my soul mate.

The end. A fine romance by Passion Seekers Anonymous.
